In the 1960s, the basic tool, apart from a wrench, a screwdriver, and a timing light, was a baseball bat. Sometimes when the battery seemed dead, you could tap on the posts and that 1966 Chevy 496 engine would fire; when the alternator belt loosened, a bat wedged between the engine and the alternator provided the right amount of tension to tighten the bolt.

Keep a set of screwdrivers that contains both flat and Phillips heads in various lengths. If the screwdriver must fit in a small space, you’ll need one with a short shaft. If it must slip into a narrow space with no room for your hand, you’ll need one with an extra-long shaft.
